In January 2012 I was asked by all-girl garage band The Vinylators (Mexico) to contribute to three tracks for an EP called Ultrapsychovinylization to be released on Green Cookie. After a successful recording (during my 23rd trip to Mexico) the band asked me to join and appear live at a show with them doing It’s a Long Way Home and Trouble. So now I have a new international psycho-garage band called Bob Urh Y Las Vinylators. After 30 years of playing and releasing psycho-sonic-sounds-galore globally (34 releases since ‘82) there’s no reason to stop now. Especially with unreleased tracks oozing out of the vaults!! As well Bare Bones tracks for new LP titled “Haunted Hootenannies ‘N’ Hoedowns” and talk of a full LP for Bob Urh Y Las Vinylators.
SO KEEP YOUR PEEPERS ON ULTRAPRODUCTIONS & GREEN COOKIE RECORDS FOR TANTALIZING FEATS OF SONIC SURPRISE!

BIO

The band Dirty Fuse was formed in mid 2008 by guitarist Duda Victor (Bufalos d’agua) and drummer Chris Kogios in order to explore the frenzied world of Surf, Rock ‘n’ Roll and Garage. Having as its key composers Duda Victor and Costas F. (bass), the music is based on a solid Dick Dale-Ventures as it unfolds with its garage concerns.

In 2008-2009 the band strolls through Athens’ underground venues. The band’s first official release is in May 2009, with “Surf Lady” and various artists’ compilation: “Unsigned United”.

Suffering many lineup changes, but always as a trio (bass, guitar, and drums), Dirty Fuse records four tracks (Lost Riders, Look Around, Perfect Device and VU) with Panagiotis Kotsiopoulos on the bass. In 2010, the band expands adding Manos Kisamitakis (saxophone), John Drake (bass) and Kostas Bakoulas (guitar). On December 14th 2010 Lost Riders (7″ vinyl) is released.

From spring to autumn 2011 the band was in the studio recording 11 tracks for their first self titled full-length album under Green Cookie Records.

BIO

Speedball JR was formed in the summer of 2000 during Ghent’s (surfcity Belgium) famous surf explosion. They originally played more traditional surf rock like Dick Dale, Bobby Fuller Four and the Ventures. You can hear these influences on their first studio session which was recorded at the end of 2000 at the Yellow Tape studio. Later on they developed a more trashy sound with more garage and sixties influences and started to write their own tunes.

The band gigged with a number of cool surf bands like Jon & The Nightriders, Slacktone, Dick Dale, The Wangs, among others, all the time they were honing their sound and finding their own place among these contemporaries. They also supported Bo Diddley at one of his final shows.

The first full CD “Whiplash,” was recorded in 2003 at Zamans Catfarm studio and was released by Drunkabilly Records. This album is also available on vinyl and includes a video which was shown on the Belgian MTV.

Also their second album “For the Broad Minded”, recorded in 2006 at CCR and released by Green Cookie records, was selling like hot cakes!

And in 2011, after some serious band changes they released their 3rd long player “Treble in Paradise”. All sleeve designs are masterpieces of hotrod-trash-art by Mighty Sam the renowned graphic artist.

Speedball JR keeps continuing to gig all over Europe, bringing their intense reverb soaked live-show to festivals and venues near you! So put on your shrunken head necklace, steal your grannies ironing board and surf on down to a venue near YOU!!!

DISTORTION TAMERS

Distortion Tamers is a R’N’R trio from Athens/Greece which plays pure, primitive and explosive music based on the primary feelings and the joy of R’N’R. Rock, garage, surf, psychobilly and punk flavors mixed with their “live on stage attitude” create their own style of sound, expressing THEIR nowadays version of rock and roll.

They were formed at the end of 2009, played their debut gig on May 2010 (opening for the underground Greek band The Last Drive) getting excellent reviews from the Greek press.

Distortion Tamers’ line-up is:

Kostis Anagnostopoulos (Kosta.A-Monk) ― Guitar/Vocals.

The basic composer of the band with two decades of experience on his back with bands from both local bands and in other places in Europe (Germany), had already have a considerable huge amount of experience on the R’N’R subject. He also composed the music for the film ‘MEDUSA’ (science fiction award in Houston Texas USA film festival) and participated in the making of several recordings and live performances.

Christophoros Triantaphillopoulos (Silver) ― Drums.

With more than 20 years of service as the drummer of Greek neo-psychedelic pioneers Purple Overdose and No Man’s Land he also had the pleasure to contribute in the making of 12 records.

Stelios Voumvakis (Pep) ― Bass.

The 22-year-old potentially talented bass player (the fresh blood in the Tamers line up)!

As you’re reading this Distortion Tamers have just finished recording their debut album “Junglehead Stories” which will be released by Green Cookie records.

In their plans is to continue creating R’N’R records and play R’N’R gigs!

… STAY TUNED !!!

EL RAY: R.I.P. El Kid’o 1981-2008

El Ray RIP El Kido 1981-2008

Our dear El Kid’o aka Rasmus Nybo has passed away after a short and unfair battle against cancer.

We will miss him dearly and will always treasure the excellent time we have had together.

El Ray will continue as a trio and will start working on the upcoming album with the working title “El Ray in Space” shortly.

Just in the spirit of the bass groovy, tight playing, good looking, beer drinking, best friend and cool dude El Kid’o.

El Kid’o Forever!!

REVIEWS

“Another name that springs to mind is Howe Gelb. Had he spent his childhood in a basement instead of a barn he’d probably sound just like Bob Urh. Or if Lux Interior had spent his formative years in the streets instead of home watching cartoons The Cramps might sound just like The Bare Bones (…) Somebody should send a copy of this to Jon Spencer. And Jack White too (…)”. EMDS Rockzine

“If the ghosts of Brian Jones and John Lee Hooker got together in their little corner of hell with a fifth of mash whiskey this is what it would sound like. Everything that exile on main street should have been. Raw, Shambolic juju-blues that rates with Sioux city pete in the psychodrama department.” Jeff Dahl, Carbon 14 magazine (USA)

“It’s not easy to describe his style, it’s some kind of weird mix between garage punk, americana with some Velvet Underground, psychobilly, Johnny Thunders, psych spices – psychotic semi-acoustic desert music (…) The world of Bob Urh is very strange – something between imagination, dreams and reality (…) If you can imagine Roky Erickson join Giant Sand with lot of booze and other means, you will know what I’m talking about”. No Brains zine (The Nederlands)

“This band plays stripped down, raw and crude blues punk (for a lack of a better term) with a garage vibe that calls both mid sixties electric blues and more post psych stuff.” The Trouble With Norma magazine (USA)

“Cryptic blues”. 442 Eme Rue zine (France)

“Apocalypticly folky”. Secretly Canadian (USA)

“Real rock’n’roll”. Bill Kelly: WFMU’s Sultan of Psycho radio show (USA)

“An artisanal CD into folk punk trend a la Sky Saxon”. Garage Band Revisited zine (France)

“Still, the nice, spidery acoustic sound helps convey the dark rural energy these guys ooze.” Back to Comm magazine (USA)

Those of you with reasonably good recall may well remember us cooing over a 10 inch platter by Goggle A that’s currently getting a limited airing on the Green Cookie imprint, seems this garage surf twang loving label have just released a bit of a corker in the guise of an album by Bob Urh and the Bare Bones entitled ’hoodoo garage’. as an added bonus the set is available as a free download for today only – which if your reading this next week was alas 8th January 2014. We’ve had a quick earful of said set and suggest your missing a trick if you don’t take them up on their offer not least because ’pretending’ has a seriously smoked lo-fi aura as though a would be Simon Joyner was channelling some strangely woozy sonic reaction brought on by a collective mixing of Velvet Underground, mid 70’s Stones and Suicide types into a punch drunk lysergic love note that shuffles and stumbles sweetly as though fractured and left a little worse for wear having been refracted through the Bordellos viewfinder. Saying that we here are much smitten by the frayed sly strut blues rumble of ’graveyard shift’ which had us calling to mind an out of it Modern Lovers duelling with Television – don’t get any cooler than that pop kids. The Sunday Experience (8 Jan 2014).

THE MUTANTS: “Deathrace 3000” (CD)

THE MUTANTS “Deathrace 3000” CD  (Green Cookie records, GC003, 12.03.2002)

Funky garage. Afrogaragemambo. Psychedelic voodoo groove. Oh dear… The Mutants are a tough little bastard to exactly pin down what they’re all about. But with music this cool, funky and with an all-out party on!-attitude you really shouldn’t even care. The Mutants was originally started as an instrumental garage rock band in 1998. As The Mutants slowly began incorporating more rhythmic influences in their music, the line-up was fortified with a percussionist and a saxophone player. Some say the Finnish music scene would never be the same… The band released their first 7″, “Le Mutant”, in the summer of 2001 on a Finnish label Legal Records after which the band has released a bunch of singles and appeared on compilations worldwide. Tracks from the singles and some compilation appearances were put on one CD by the Greek label Green Cookie Records in 2002.
The sound of The Mutants combines the fuzz of 60’s garage, hints at psychedelia from the same era, funky rhythms from the 70’s, plain damn rock ‘n’ roll, and all things in between the aforementioned into one hell of a hellraisin’ good time.

REVIEWS

“Instrumental madness from Finland. Fun, funky, weird, and drunkenly eclectic. The fantasy of a dance party DJ familiar with everything from Dave “Baby” Cortez to Iggy to Manu Dibango damn near gets realized here”. The First Church Of Holy Rock’N’Roll (USA)

“If you took the soul of the Stax label, say Otis Redding, and swirled it in a blender with garage hypnotica, then crushed the resulting pulp with big drums and garage fuzz, you’d be close to the sound of this”. Reverb Central (USA)

“If a rock n’ roll album review features the term “seven minute instrumental,” it’s usually found alongside words like “jazz fusion” or “Phish.” But not this time. Finland’s The Mutants use thick percussion and elements of funk to update the sound of traditional instrumental rock. The Mutant’s highly original sound challenges the unwritten rules of instrumental rock by disregarding the 3 minute time frame and the strict rules of instrumentation. Deathrace 3000 is an enjoyable album that proves that you can push the boundaries of instrumental rock without being a pretentious jam band”. Deadbeat magazine (Denmark)
