Eddie Ugata, a vintage guitar collector and one of Japan’s foremost authorities on 1960s surf music, formed the El Caminos in 1994 out of the ashes of his previous band The L.S.D.s, who achieved popularity in the Kansai garage scene. The El Caminos debut album Knock ‘Em Out was released in 1995.
The band’s mission statement: “pursuing the sounds of 1960s surf music without limits” embodies their sound. The El Caminos started to receive attention from surf instrumental enthusiasts, not only in Japan but throughout the world. Their second album, Surfer’s Lounge was released in June of 1996 and attracted attention from surf music fans overseas.
The El Caminos released a best album called Reverb Explosion in August of 1997 on the legendary Del-Fi Records, a label that has a very special place in the heart of Eddie. All 15 tracks were personally selected by label founder Bob Keane for a US release. The album stirred up a great response: the track Sumo Wrestler even reached the number one spot on the chart of a college radio station on the West Coast.
The El Caminos experienced several changes in membership over the years and continued their activities at a slow pace. In 2005, the band released their third album Beatrama. In 2013, the band played their first show overseas at the Surf Guitar 101 Convention.

Los Protones were formed in Lima, Peru, in 2007, after the breakup of Manganzoides, one of Latin America’s most influential garage punk bands of the 90’s-00’s. Over three studio albums, Los Protones (2009), Hijas del Diablo (2011) and Maravilla! (2013), they have developed a unique instro style that combines surf rock, psychedelia, garage and, occasionally, some Peruvian tropical sounds, spaghetti western and more.
Los Protones have played all over Peru, from large outdoor festivals and national TV sets to old theaters and tiny bars, and have also taken their sounds to Argentina and Mexico. The current lineup includes Gustavo (percussion), Tito (drums), Andres (bass), Jimi (organ) and Gonzaleo (guitar).

Watang! Is a surf-instro project led by El Sentenza, former banjo player from the Legendary Kid Combo, together with Marla’O, guitar player from the all-female Italian garage queens The Cleopatras. This project was born at the beginning of the summer of 2013, with the help of Barba San, from the Italian beat band The Albinos, Cecilia Ann, famous bass based indie-pendent songwriter and Mimmi, one of the best and eclectic jazz drummers of the Garda Lake area. The former idea was to create a standard surf combo, then after a couple of weeks in the basement, the project took a different shape, mixing the musical tastes of all the musicians involved.
The original surf sound took a different direction, moving towards the surf revival of the 90’s, the garage beat revival, and the traditional Oriental melodies from the Far East. All the imaginary and the artwork was inspired by the oriental Z movies, martial arts and fancied mysterious stories from ancient east. The band wear original Kung Fu kimonos and the (dragon) ladies are dressed like famous almond eyed movies star actresses.
Main influences are bands like The Bomboras, Ghastly Ones, Satan’s Pilgrims, mixed with The Ventures, Takeshi Terauchi, The Fuzztones, Gravedigger V, Roky Erikson, The Pixies, The Cramps, Link Wray, Johnny Thunders, Dick Dale, Question Mark and the Mysterians…
This first rate Italian Garage/Surf band comes with their own brand of wyld instrumental kink, mixed the influences of The Bomboras, Fuzztones, The Ventures and Dick Dale with bloody Far East vibes. Hi-Profilic Reverb/Fuzz/Organ driven tunes as ya all wanna meet here on Surfadelic.
Their sound creates a cinematic surf experience like it was made for some lost 70’s Hong Kong Kung-Fu flick, alternative soundtrack for “Enter the Dragon” or some Takashi Miike KILLER extravaganza. One of the best new surfin’ stuff I heard lately, so don’t you dare miss it! Say… WATANG!

Directly from the haunted beaches of Costa Rica, baptized with the name of a fictional band of motorized rebels, Los Cuchillos (knives) are a garage-surf band with a frenetic live show. Los Cuchillos formed in 2005 by Tony Cuchillo influenced by the sounds and culture of the 50s and 60s, mixed with the aesthetics of horror movies and science fiction.
Los Cuchillos have played lots of shows in Costa Rica in the most important festivals, have toured Mexico several times, playing Vive Latino Festival in 2013, as well as Panama.
They have released the self-titled EP Los Cuchillos (2006) and a full CD titled Monstronautas de la Era Atomica (2008), and they have almost finished their new album Isla Macabro! (soon to be released by Green Cookie Records), that has a crude and primitive sound ready to blow everybody’s ears!!!!!
With some lineup changes in this almost 10years of reelin and rockin, Los Cuchillos have created their personal style that combines rock ‘n roll, surf, fun and debauchery of guitars with high reverberation!!!

The band show a versatility of sound and an ear for catchy, toe tapping melody which takes them beyond the cliches that can often be associated with the surfing genre. Combining a fresh, modern style with a healthy nod to the past, ‘surf with a twist’ El Ray have managed to achieve a new, classic sound.
Their 3 full length releases, the two 10″ inches and the singles are known to have been recorded during blizzards, far far away from the sunny side of life and Californian lifestyle. Whatever it is, El Ray is the band that keeps on giving that goosebumbing and hair raising Instro-surf!
El Ray’s merits has proved the band to be a serious contender in writing and performing modern instrumentals that would make your hifi-stereo A GO-GO!!
